The Devil on the Wall The reformation in Europe was a time of belief in gods and magic where the Catholic Church ruled in matters of morality and law, until their dogma was challenged by the emergence of the new Protestant church. The Reformers made use of the printing press to distribute their alternative ideas… but the Jesuit Priesthood had a more radical plan. “The Jesuits were very important for the Roman Catholic Church because they were multimedia people,” explains Dr Andreas Scheucher, curator of the AV Stumpfl Museum in Austria. “They founded a special form of spiritual theatre – the Jesuit theatre – and used the Magic Lantern. The first projected images from the Laterna Magica were images of the devil.” This was probably the first use of broadcast or projected images for the purposes of propaganda, but as wealth moved from the hands of the church and aristocracy and into the hands of merchants, so did the use of the Laterna Magica.

Edward Muybridge was a famous photographer from the 19th century. He became best known for his experiments with moving images, through which he became an important precursor to film. Who was Muybridge? Muybridge was born in 1830 in England and later moved to the United States. He initially worked as a bookseller, but subsequently gained fame as a photographer of landscapes, cities, and especially the movements of people and animals. What did he do? He investigated exactly how movement occurs. His most famous experiment was photographing a galloping horse. Using multiple cameras in succession, he proved that a horse briefly lifts all four legs off the ground while galloping. His series of photographs later formed an important basis for the development of cinema and animation.

On December 19, 1931, together with Mannus Franken and Leo Krijn, he founded the Nederlandsche Smalfilm Liga (Dutch Amateur Film League). He was the editor of *Het Veerwerk*, a magazine for amateur filmmakers. The first issue appeared on July 10, 1932, and was published by *Focus* in Bloemendaal. A few months later, the magazine became the official organ of the Nederlandsche Smalfilm Liga. Regular contributors to the magazine included his father and Dick Laan, who is often called the first amateur filmmaker of the Netherlands. Dick Boer was also the editor of the magazine *Focus*, the official organ of the Dutch Amateur Photographers Association.

These connections act as mechanical linkage, which have the effect of a specific, fixed motion. In 1941, a group of Germans settled in Amsterdam. Not soldiers, but civilians. Artists, to be precise. They set to work to create a grand, and until then, most expensive film production in the Netherlands about Rembrandt van Rijn. In UFA Filmstadt Amsterdam, the former Cinetone studios, an enormous set rose in the form of an exact replica of the Rembrandt house on Jodenbreestraat, including the surrounding houses. In addition to the German cast and director, many Dutch people also worked on the film: as extras, set builders, tailors, or lighting technicians. Under the direction of Hans Steinhoff, who had made a name for himself as a Nazi filmmaker with his earlier film Hitlerjunge Quex, a film like a painting emerges with beautiful interplay of light and shadow.

This years commercial comes in at 2 minutes and features two friends taking a snowy hike, one of whom drops their iPhone into the snow, which is soon picked up by a forest creature, who proceeds to gather even more forest creatures to use the iPhone and stage a sing-and-dance. It’s goofy and fun, and all of the various animals are puppets, giving it sort of a Jim Henson vibe. The holiday ad is called “A Critter Carol”, with a tagline “This holiday, remember that friendship is a gift”, and the entire commercial was shot on an iPhone 17 Pro (which is also the same iPhone that drops into the snow).

LaserVision Protocols appeared as early as 1969, and a first unit was publicly demonstrated in 1972. Philips had been independently developing optical video recording in Eindhoven since 1970 and had been collaborating with DiscoVision since 1975. In 1976, the optical video disc was released on the American market in Atlanta. On all video discs, the image and sound were analog; however, on the Laserdisk discs manufactured after 1984, the sound was digitally encoded. The system became a commercial flop because Philips viewed itself as a hardware manufacturer and left the production of software (the discs) to third parties. Initially, they saw no potential in the new system, so players entered the market but no discs. Moreover, it was a disadvantage that video discs were not yet offered for rent in the rapidly emerging video rental stores, meaning the video recorder, which had been introduced a few years earlier, prevailed over the optical system for the time being.

 A script supervisor (also called continuity supervisor or script) is a member of a film crew who oversees the continuity of the motion picture including dialogue and action during a scene. The script supervisor may also be called upon to ensure wardrobe, props, set dressing, hair, makeup are consistent from scene to scene. The script supervisor keeps detailed notes on each take of the scene being filmed. The notes recorded by the script supervisor during the shooting of a scene are used to help the editor cut the scenes together in the order specified in the shooting script.
