When the melody is abandoned, it is referred to not as an arrangement but as a variation. In classical music and jazz, a piece of music, usually a song, is often played as a theme with variations: first the piece itself is heard in an unadorned version, followed by a series of variations, which in jazz are often partly improvised. The whole can be considered an arrangement of the song.
