VOC ships

From the year the VOC was founded in 1602 until 1700, an estimated 317,000 people of international descent sailed on VOC vessels. Between 1700 and 1795, this number amounted to approximately 655,000 sailors. Of these, roughly one in three sailors returned. Some remained in the Dutch East Indies. Due to diseases (such as scurvy), epidemics, shipwrecks, and hostilities, an estimated 5 to 10 percent of all crew members died on the outward or return
voyage.
