Beyond Question: Groote Museum

Screenwriters are responsible for researching the story, developing the narrative, writing the script, screenplay, dialogues and delivering it, in the required format, to development executives. Screenwriters therefore have great influence over the creative direction and emotional impact of the screenplay and, arguably, of the finished film. Screenwriters either pitch original ideas to producers, in the hope that they will be optioned or sold; or are commissioned by a producer to create a screenplay from a concept, true story, existing screen work or literary work, such as a novel, poem, play, comic book, or short story.

No other land

I started filming when we started to finish.’ So says Palestinian Basel Adra, who decided to pick up his camera in 2019 to document how the Israeli army systematically destroys homes, schools and other living facilities in his home village and surrounding settlements in the West Bank, to ‘make way for military training areas’. In his documentary, Adra is assisted by Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham. The blossoming friendship between the two is the linchpin in this gripping and shocking story about power, abuse of power and powerlessness, set in the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Winner of the Audience Award at IDFA 2024 and awarded an Oscar.

Camera tricks

Compositing is the process or technique of combining visual elements from separate sources into single images, often to create the illusion that all those elements are parts of the same scene. Live-action shooting for compositing is variously called "chroma key", "blue screen", "green screen" and other names. Today, most compositing is achieved through digital image manipulation. Pre-digital compositing techniques, however, go back as far as the trick films of Georges Méliès in the late 19th century, and some are still in use.

Motion control photography is a technique used in still and motion photography that enables precise control of, and optionally also allows repetition of, camera movements. It can be used to facilitate special effects photography. The process can involve filming several elements using the same camera motion, and then compositing the elements into a single image. Other effects are often used along with motion control, such as chroma key to aid the compositing. Motion control camera rigs are also used in still photography with or without compositing; for example in long exposures of moving vehicles

Eindhoven: Historical village

While the most common form of film adaptation is the use of a novel as the basis, other works adapted into films include non-fiction (including journalism), autobiographical works, comic books, scriptures, plays, historical sources and even other films. Adaptation from such diverse resources has been a ubiquitous practice of filmmaking since the earliest days of cinema in nineteenth-century Europe. In contrast to when making a remake, movie directors usually take more creative liberties when creating a film adaptation, changing the context of factors such as audience or genre.

Djakarta '46

Jakarta, 1946. The capital of Indonesia was still called Djakarta and the archipelago was officially still called the Dutch East Indies. At least, from a Dutch perspective. Indonesia had already declared independence after the Second World War and the struggle to achieve it grew steadily.

That revolution not only led to terrible violence and bloodshed, but also to an unexpected role for sex and sensuality, as Djakarta 1946 shows. The result is an original yet unbalanced war thriller.

MANKIND

Steve Cutts A animator who pulls no punches when it comes to exposing the darker side of modern life. With a sharp satirical edge, his work dives deep into themes like consumerism, environmental destruction, and our growing dependence on technology—holding up a mirror to the excesses we often overlook.

What makes his style truly stand out is the way he fuses vintage charm with brutal honesty. Inspired by the rubber-hose cartoons of the 1920s and 30s, along with bold lines from modern comics, his animations and illustrations are both nostalgic and hauntingly relevant. Steve Cutts doesn’t just create art—he sparks conversations we can’t afford to ignore.

NoordOogst: citygarden

The increasingly rare industry term "short subject" carries more of an assumption that the film is shown as part of a presentation along with a feature film. Short films are often screened at local, national, or international film festivals and made by independent filmmakers with either a low budget or no budget at all. They are usually funded by one or more film grants, nonprofit organizations, sponsors, or personal funds. Short films are generally used for industry experience and as a platform to showcase talent to secure funding for future projects from private investors, a production company, or film studios. They can also be released with feature films, and can also be included as bonus features on some home video releases.

To the lakes

More than 50 years ago, nature created this vast marshland in southern Flevoland. Geese, spoonbills and cormorants soon found their way to the Oostvaardersplassen, as did deer, foxes, hares, bats and butterflies. And since 2006, even the sea eagle has been breeding there. In this bird-rich marshland, man and nature work together in a special way. For example, you will encounter Heck cattle, Konik horses and red deer along the way. They keep the grasslands open in a natural way with their grazing. And they in turn also require care and management. Discover this bird-rich marshland and experience how each season has its own dynamics and surprising developments.

Meerseldreef

What is a cult film? A cult film is one that has a passionate following, but does not appeal to everybody. James Bond movies are not cult films, but chainsaw movies are. Just because a movie is a cult film does not automatically guarantee quality: some cult movies are very bad; others are very, very good.

Videophone (in Metropolis)

The concept of videotelephony was conceived in the late 19th century, and versions were available to the public starting in the 1930s..

In 1970, AT&T launched the first commercial personal videotelephone system. In addition to videophones, there existed image phones which exchanged still images between units every few seconds over conventional telephone lines. The development of advanced video codecs, more powerful CPUs, and high-bandwidth Internet service in the late 1990s allowed digital videophones to provide high-quality low-cost color service between users almost any place in the world..

News media organizations have used videotelephony for broadcasting.

Reconstruction: Market Garden

In film, flashbacks depict the subjective experience of a character by showing a memory of a previous event and they are often used to "resolve an enigma". Flashbacks are important in film noir and melodrama films. In films and television, several camera techniques, editing approaches and special effects have evolved to alert the viewer that the action shown is a flashback or flashforward; for example, the edges of the picture may be deliberately blurred, photography may be jarring or choppy, or unusual coloration or sepia tone, or monochrome when most of the story is in full color, may be used. The scene may fade or dissolve, often with the camera focused on the face of the character and there is typically a voice-over by a narrator (who is often, but not always, the character who is experiencing the memory).
