 I started filming when we started to finish.’ So says Palestinian Basel Adra, who decided to pick up his camera in 2019 to document how the Israeli army systematically destroys homes, schools and other living facilities in his home village and surrounding settlements in the West Bank, to ‘make way for military training areas’. In his documentary, Adra is assisted by Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham. The blossoming friendship between the two is the linchpin in this gripping and shocking story about power, abuse of power and powerlessness, set in the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

That revolution not only led to terrible violence and bloodshed, but also to an unexpected role for sex and sensuality, as Djakarta 1946 shows. The result is an original yet unbalanced war thriller.

The scene may fade or dissolve, often with the camera focused on the face of the character and there is typically a voice-over by a narrator (who is often, but not always, the character who is experiencing the memory).
