The first company to focus exclusively on the production of cars was the French Panhard et Levassor in 1889. They were quickly followed by Peugeot 2 years later. In the United States, Duryea was the first in 1892. The Benz Velo and the Duryea Motor Wagon are seen as the first standardized cars. This gave birth to the car industry.
In a few years, hundreds of producers were founded to build steam cars, electric cars and fuel cars. Around the turn of the century, there were more than a thousand factories in the Alsace region alone, between Germany and France, engaged in the production of cars.
