Stranded

Location shooting is the practice of filming in an actual setting rather than on a sound stage or back lot. In filmmaking a location is any place where a film crew will be filming actors and recording their dialog. A location where dialog is not recorded may be considered as a second unit photography site. Often filmmakers choose to shoot on location because they believe that greater realism can be achieved in a "real" place, however location shooting is also often motivated by the film's budget. Many films shoot interior scenes on a sound stage and exterior scenes on location. Before filming on location its generally wise to conduct a recce. A word used in media production, derived from "reconnoiter". It is a pre-filming visit to a location to work out its suitability for shooting, including access to necessary facilities and assessment of any potential lighting or sound issues.

Making of an animation

A little peek behind the scenes at what went into the making of the music video for Michael Andrew's "Bubble In Space." Hint: There was A LOT of drawing and A LOT of scanning...

In cinema, a making-of, also known as behind-the-scenes, the set or on the set is a documentary film that features the production of a film or television program. This is often referred to as the EPK (electronic press kit) video, due to its main usage as a promotional tool, either concurrent with theatrical release or as a bonus feature for the film's DVD.

Home Movie Day

Home Movie Day (established 2002) is an annual event that celebrates amateur films and filmmaking. It is a worldwide event, held at local venues all over the world and organized locally by volunteers. Home Movie Day events provide the opportunity for individuals and families to have their films inspected and to see and share their own home movies with an audience of their community. The event is an opportunity to discover the personal, historical, and social importance of home movies and for individuals to learn how to best care for them.

Castle and cats

Cat is a symbol for spiritual power, freedom, love of liberty and bad
luck in Japan. On the contrary the black cat is linked to evil cunning
in the Celtic world and with harmful djins in Islamic world.

In Europe, the cat is honored as an exalted soul and at other times it
is associated with witches and the occult (especially the black cat). It
is therefore seen as a symbol of superstition and bad luck.

Future super 8 mm

Super 8 has been quiet for 30 years, but a small worldwide following of around 2,500 filmmakers is keeping the medium alive. Following traditional film photography, instant photos and vinyl records, this medium is now poised to take a ride on the retro express. Kodak has introduced a new Super 8 camera and reintroduced Ektachrome color reversal film. Ferrania (Italy) and Adox (Germany) are creating new film stocks for Super 8. Other companies are also researching and developing Super 8 cameras and film. The time has come to provide an information resource to support these developments. A portal featuring modern responsive design, which functions on home computers as well as smartphones.

Dunkirk 'Behind the Frame'

Filming for the World War II action thriller Dunkirk is set to move from France to the Netherlands next week, as the fishing island of Urk takes centre stage. The blockbuster film focuses on the rescue of some 335,000 soldiers who had been cut off by the German army by 800 little boats sent over the channel from England. According to the Volkskrant, a crew of 200 and 70 extras will be ready to film from Monday at a location some five kilometres from Urk in the IJsselmeer. The fishing village itself does not feature in the film – but its harbour has been taken over by boats and props, including part of a British bomber, the paper says. In addition, all the empty houses in the village have been rented for the crew. The production is the biggest to take place in the Netherlands since Deventer ‘starred’ in A Bridge too Far in 1976, the Volkskrant says.

HAL cruise

Holland America Line was founded in 1893 as the Nederlandsche-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij (Dutch-American Steamship Company), a shipping and passenger line. It was headquartered in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and provided service to the Americas. The company was formed as a result of the reorganization of an earlier company, Plate, Reuchlin & Co. The company's first ship was the original Rotterdam, which sailed its 15-day maiden voyage from the Netherlands to New York City on October 15, 1872. Other services were started to other new world ports, including Hoboken, Baltimore and South America. Cargo service to New York started in 1809.

During the first 25 years the company carried 400,000 people from Europe to the Americas. Other North American ports were added during the early 20th century.

Preview

A preview performance refers to a showing of a film to a select audience, usually for the purposes of corporate promotions, before the public film premiere itself. Previews are sometimes used to judge audience reaction, which if unexpectedly negative, may result in recutting or even refilming certain sections based on the audience response. One example of a film that was changed after a negative response from the test screening was 1982's First Blood. After the test audience responded very negatively to the death of protagonist John Rambo, a Vietnam veteran, at the end of the film, the company wrote and re-shot a new ending in which the character survives.

Vampire in the movie

A horror film is a movie that seeks to elicit a physiological reaction, such as an elevated heartbeat, through the use of fear and shocking one’s audiences. Inspired by literature from authors like Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, and Mary Shelley, the horror genre has existed for more than a century. The macabre and the supernatural are frequent themes. Horror may also overlap with the fantasy, supernatural fiction and thriller genres.

Horror films often deal with viewers' nightmares, fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage into the everyday world. Prevalent elements include ghosts, extraterrestrials, vampires, werewolves, demons, satanism, gore, torture, vicious animals, evil witches, monsters, zombies, cannibals, psychopaths, natural or man-made disasters, and serial killers.

Some subgenres of horror include action horror, comedy horror, body horror, disaster horror, holiday horror, horror drama, psychological horror, science fiction horror, slasher horror, supernatural horror, gothic horror, natural horror, zombie horror, first-person horror and teen horror.

50 Feet That Shook The World

This stop-motion homage to the silent, Russian classics takes a twisted look at the ongoing war between film and video. (Imagine Jan Svankmajer remaking Potemkin!) This film was made for LA Flicker's "Attack of the 50 foot Reels" (1 roll of Super 8 film, edited in camera, sound created without seeing footage!)

FILMMAKER BIO:
John Cannizzaro grew up in New England where he made several short films before relocating to Los Angeles in 1990. There he completed his first mini feature, Critical Mass, which was reviewed by Paul Malcolm in the Nov. 22, 1996 LA Weekly as a "low key tale of guttersnipe mysticism...Critical Mass is heavy on mood and symbolism with Cannizzaro drawing some beautiful compositions...What's most intriguing about the film is the connection it makes between spiritualism and ennui".

Still working primarily in Super 8 film, he has completed several more short films.

First film screenings

The Lumi̬res held their first private screening of projected motion pictures in 1895. This first screening on 22 March 1895 took place in Paris, at the "Society for the Development of the National Industry", in front of an audience of 200 people Рamong which L̩on Gaumont, then director of the Comptoir de la photographie. The main focus of this conference by Louis Lumi̬re were the recent developments in the photograph industry, mainly the research on polychromy (colour photography). It was much to Lumi̬re's surprise that the moving black-and-white images retained more attention than the coloured stills photographs

Andalucia Suite

A suite, in Western classical music and jazz, is an ordered set of instrumental or orchestral/concert band pieces. It originated in the late 14th century as a pairing of dance tunes and grew in scope to comprise up to five dances, sometimes with a prelude, by the early 17th century. The separate movements were often thematically and tonally linked. The term can also be used to refer to similar forms in other musical traditions, such as the Turkish fasıl and the Arab waslah and nuubaat.

In digital video, photography, television and film, production refers to the tasks that must be completed or executed during the filming or shooting. This includes tasks such as setting up scenes, the capture of raw footage, and usage of set designs, to name a few of the many pre-production tasks. Production is the second step in film creation. It follows the pre-production phase and evolves into the post-production stage.

Evoluon Eindhoven

In the 1960s and 1970s the Evoluon attracted large visitor numbers, since its interactive exhibitions were a new and unique concept in the Netherlands at that time. But when competing science museums opened in other cities, the number of visitors began to decline. After several years of losing money, the original museum closed down in 1989 and the Evoluon was converted into a conference centre, opening in 1998.

In the UK the Evoluon is chiefly remembered from Bert Haanstra's wordless short film entitled simply Evoluon, commissioned by Philips to publicise the museum, and shown as a trade test colour film on BBC television from 1968 to 1972.

Camera positions "avant la lettre" so to speak with fictures from mirrors and special tracking.

Although camera movements are often implemented to add excitement to shots, their best use is when new information is revealed. At the beginning level, budding filmmakers sometimes tilt and pan without the proper motivation. Camera movements can be distracting and even annoying when overused or used without a reason. Don’t use a camera movement to show that you can. Use it when you know you need it.

The technological boundaries between home-movie-making and professional movie-making are becoming increasingly blurred as prosumer equipment often offers features previously only available on professional equipment.

In recent years, clips from home movies have been available to wider audiences through television series such as America's Funniest Home Videos, in Great Britain You've Been Framed! and Internet online video-sharing sites such as YouTube. The popularity of the Internet, and wider availability of high-speed connections has provided new ways of sharing home movies, such as video weblogs (vlogs), and video podcasts.

:

Filmmaking is like a marriage: it's messy and crazy and chaotic until one day you die. But being open and willing to compromise is not only super mature of you, it's also a necessity if you're going to be working and collaborating with others who also have opinions and expertise and experience.
Talking too much: Stop talking about making films and just go make films. Don't have any gear? Grab your phone, go outside, and shoot a time-lapse of the setting sun, or an artsy fartsy black and white montage of nature, or a short film shot entirely in POV shots.

Albert Cuyp famous Amsterdam street market

We all like to be entertained without having to think too much. The purpose of a show or movie is to relax the viewer, tired after one full day of work. It feels good to empty your mind of all troubles and problems and enter the fascinating world of movies, even though characters are real and the situations presented are inspired from real life events and happenings.

A short film allows you to have fun and enjoy without having to maintain the focus for a very long time. This is the reason why some people don’t like going to artistic movies, as they find it impossible to stay focused for one hour and a half. When they have to watch a sequence of movies with 10 minutes length, they can even miss one of them without missing the whole point of the story. With long movies, this is almost always impossible, as all details matter.

Virtual cinematography is the set of cinematographic techniques performed in a computer graphics environment. This includes a wide variety of subjects like photographing real objects, often with stereo or multi-camera setup, for the purpose of recreating them as three-dimensional objects and algorithms for automated creation of real and simulated camera angles.

Yellowstone National Park spans an area of 3,468.4 square miles (8,983 km2), comprising lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges. Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest high-elevation lakes in North America and is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest supervolcano on the continent. The caldera is considered an active volcano. It has erupted with tremendous force several times in the last two million years. Half of the world's geothermal features are in Yellowstone, fueled by this ongoing volcanism. Lava flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone. The park is the centerpiece of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest remaining nearly-intact ecosystem in the Earth's northern temperate zone.

Imovie can be a great help.

In this old v8 video I manage to improve a number of things

Video contained half images, cut them away

New transitions applied

New sound (music) was added

Driving scenes were stabilised

Colors were corrected

So was occasionally the “white-point”

Where appropriate the speed of the scene was adapted

Filmmaking also takes place outside of the mainstream and is commonly called independent filmmaking. Since the introduction of DV technology, the means of production have become more democratized. Filmmakers can conceivably shoot and edit a film, create and edit the sound and music, and mix the final cut on a home computer. However, while the means of production may be democratized, financing, traditional distribution, and marketing remain difficult to accomplish outside the traditional system. In the past, most independent filmmakers have relied on film festivals (such as Sundance, Venice, Cannes and Toronto film festivals) to get their films noticed and sold for distribution and production. However, the Internet has allowed for relatively inexpensive distribution of independent films on websites such as YouTube. As a result, several companies have emerged to assist filmmakers in getting independent movies seen and sold via mainstream internet marketplaces, often adjacent to popular Hollywood titles. With internet movie distribution, independent filmmakers who fail to garner a traditional distribution deal now have the ability to reach global audiences.

Bad Wimpfel

A spa town is a resort town based on a mineral spa (a developed mineral spring). Patrons visit spas to "take the waters" for their purported health benefits. The word spa is derived from the name of Spa, a town in Belgium.

Thomas Guidott set up a medical practice in the English town of Bath in 1668. He became interested in the curative properties of the hot mineral waters there and in 1676 wrote A discourse of Bathe, and the hot waters there. Also, Some Enquiries into the Nature of the water. This brought the purported health-giving properties of the waters to the attention of the aristocracy, who started to partake in them soon after.

The term spa is used for towns or resorts offering hydrotherapy, which can include cold water or mineral water treatments and geothermal baths.

Diamonds from Antwerp

Antwerp's diamond district, also known as the Diamond Quarter (Diamantkwartier), and dubbed the Square Mile is an area within the city of Antwerp, Belgium. It consists of several square blocks covering an area of about one square mile. While, as of 2012, much of the gem cutting and polishing work historically done in the neighborhood had moved to low wage centers elsewhere, about 84% of the world's rough diamonds passed through the district, making it the largest diamond district in the world with a turnover of 54 billion dollars.

A film genre is a motion picture category based on similarities in either the narrative elements or the emotional response to the film (namely, serious, comic, etc.). Most theories of film genre are borrowed from literary genre criticism. The basic genres include fiction and documentary, from which subgenres have emerged, such as docufiction and docudrama. Other subgenres include the courtroom and trial-focused drama known as the legal drama. Types of fiction which may seem unrelated can also be combined to form hybrid subgenres, such as the melding of horror and comedy in the Evil Dead films. Other popular combinations are the romantic comedy and the action comedy film.

A remake is a film or television series that is based on an earlier work and tells the same, or a very similar, story.
The term "remake" is generally used in reference to a movie which uses an earlier movie as the main source material, rather than in reference to a second, later movie based on the same source

A storyboard artist visualizes stories and sketches frames of the story. Quick pencil drawings and marker renderings are two of the most common traditional techniques, although nowadays Adobe Flash, Adobe Photoshop, and other storyboard applications are often used. The digital camera is one of the latest techniques in creating storyboards.
They are mostly freelance artists, typically hired by art directors and film directors. Typically freelance storyboard artists will belong to one or more storyboard agencies much like an illustration agency.
Many storyboard artists nowadays begin and finish their work on computers using software and digital pencils or a graphics tablet. Storyboard artists may use photos to create visuals where stock photos or photos taken specifically for the project are put together digitally to produce a photographic representation called a photovisual.

For motion pictures, some filmmakers, directors, and producers choose to use clip-art computer programs designed to create storyboards, or use a dedicated 3D storyboarding software, or a more multi-purpose 3D program which can also be used to create elements of the storyboards

Communications Primer

You might think that a movie about information from 1953 couldn’t possibly be relevant in the age of iPhone apps and the Internet but you’d be wrong. A Communications Primer, directed by that power couple of design Charles and Ray Eames, might refer to some hopelessly quaint technology – computer punch cards, for instance – but the underlying ideas are as current as anything you’re likely to see at a TED talk. You can watch it above.

In fact, the film made for IBM was the result of the first ever multi-media presentations that Charles Eames developed for the University of Georgia and UCLA. Using slides, music, narration and film, Eames broke down some elemental aspects of communications for the audience. Central to the film is an input/output diagram that was laid out by Claude Shannon, the father of information theory, in his 1949 book, The Mathematical Theory of Communication. As the perhaps overly soothing narrator intones, any message is transmitted by a signal through a channel to its receiver. While in the channel, the signal is altered and degraded by noise. The key to effective communication is to reduce "noise" (construed broadly) that interferes with the message and to generally simplify things.

Heidelberg the city

If you're making movies of activities within a relatively small area, it's often a good idea to change your viewpoint to accommodate the changing scene. Shoot from either side of your subject, or change from one side to the other if it gives you the best angle to show what is important to the story. However, when making a movie across an extended area, best results are usually obtained if you don't vary your viewpoint form one side of your subject to the other. For instance, if you're making a movie of a hike in the woods, it's a good idea to show your subjects always traveling in the same direction. This makes the sequence flow in a logical manner. After your subjects have reached their destination and you've filmed on-the-spot activities, such as a picnic, you can show your subjects heading in the opposite direction and returning to their starting point. Constantly changing the viewpoint and direction of travel can make your movie look fragmented and may confuse your audience.

Amsterdam "Far East"

As you make movies, keep in mind that you are really telling a story. Like any story, your movie needs a proper introduction, a body, and a conclusion - plus, continuity to tie all the parts together. Continuity may come naturally when you film the action as it happens in it normal progression, or it can be created when you edit the film into logical order later. Before shooting any movie story, it's good to write a plan. Think of what you want to film to help complete your movie story.
