Gold Hill, Shaftesbury At almost any time of day, Gold Hill is a magnet for photographers, visitors and locals wanting to enjoy or capture the beauty of Gold Hill and the views across Dorset beyond. The ancient cobbled street runs beside the Grade I listed walls of the ancient Shaftesbury Abbey, built by King Alfred the Great. At the top of Gold Hill, along with The Gold Hill Museum and Garden, is the Town Hall and the 14th century St Peter's Church. It was built in the latter part of the 15th century and is the oldest church in Shaftesbury. To many, Gold Hill is still known as ‘Hovis Hill’ due to the TV advert. To commemorate its famous association, a giant Hovis loaf can be found in front of the Town Hall.
