Choreography is the art of designing sequences of movements in which motion, form, or both are specified. Choreography may also refer to the design itself, which is sometimes expressed by means of dance notation. The term choreography first appeared in the American English dictionary in the 1950s. Prior to this, movie credits used various terms to mean choreography, such as "ensembles staged by and "dances staged by.

In the past, most independent filmmakers have relied on film festivals to get their films noticed and sold for distribution. However, the Internet has allowed for relatively inexpensive distribution of independent films. As a result several companies have emerged to assist filmmakers in getting independent movies seen and sold via mainstream internet marketplaces, oftentimes adjacent to popular Hollywood titles. With digital self distribution, independent filmmakers who fail to garner a traditional distribution deal now have the ability to reach global audiences.

A stunt performer, stuntman, is someone who performs dangerous stunts, These stunts are sometimes rigged so that they look dangerous while still having safety mechanisms, but often they are as dangerous as they appear to be. There is an inherent risk in the performance of all stunt work in film, television and stage work. With more risk in performing stunts in front of a live audience because safety mechanisms cannot be edited out and the audience can see if the performer is genuinely doing what they claim to be doing. Stunts often seen in films and television include car crashes, falling from great height, dragged behind a horse and being blown up. Film and television stunt performers are often trained in martial arts and stage combat.

One of the easiest ways to create a great set of story-boards is to visit your film's locations with a digital camera and a couple good friends to shoot some mock shots. Using your "actors", start playing with the blocking of your action, and shoot test shots in a variety of different ways. Try your best to squeeze as much visual excitement out of each variation as you can, experimenting with different angles (wide shots, close-ups, from the front, side, above and below), to see which shots might best move your story along. Once you are done, pair your favorite shots from the day with your script, and you've created a very helpful Storyboard document

In film theory, genre refers to the method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed. Most theories of film genre are borrowed from literary genre criticism. As with genre in a literary context, there is a great deal of debate over how to define or categorize genres. Besides the basic distinction in genre between fiction and documentary, film genres can be categorized in several ways.

Fictional films are usually categorized according to their setting, theme topic, mood, or format. The setting is the milieu or environment where the story and action takes place. The theme or topic refers to the issues or concepts that the film revolves around. The mood is the emotional tone of the film.

In photography and videography, a filter is a camera accessory consisting of an optical filter that can be inserted in the optical path. The filter can be a square or oblong shape mounted in a holder accessory, or, more commonly, a glass or plastic disk with a metal or plastic ring frame, which can be screwed in front of the lens or clipped onto the lens. Filters allow the photographer to have more control of the images being produced. Sometimes they are used to make only subtle changes to images; other times the image would simply not be possible without them. The negative aspects of using filters, though often negligible, include the possibility of loss of image definition if using dirty or scratched filters, and increased exposure required by the reduction in light transmitted. The former is best avoided by careful use and maintenance of filters, while the latter is a matter of technique; it usually will not be a problem if planned out properly, but in some situations filter use is impractical.

Filminfo:
A film frame, is one of the many single photographic images in a motion picture. The individual frames are separated by frame lines. Normally, 24 frames are needed for one second of film. In ordinary filming, the frames are photographed automatically, one after the other, in a movie camera. In special effects or animation filming, the frames are often shot one at a time.

The size of a film frame varies, depending on the still film format or the motion picture film format. In the smallest 8 mm amateur format for motion pictures film, it is only about 4.8 by 3.5 mm, while an IMAX frame is as large as 69.6 by 48.5 mm. The larger the frame size is in relation to the size of the projection screen, the sharper the image will appear.

Many other terms exist for an individual motion picture, including picture, picture show, moving picture, photo-play and flick. A common name for film in the United States is movie, while in Europe the term film is preferred. Additional terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema and the movies.

A leitmotif is a musical term referring to a recurring theme, associated with a particular person, place, or idea. In particular such a theme should be 'clearly identified so as to retain its identity if modified on subsequent appearances' whether such modification be in terms of rhythm, harmony, orchestration or accompaniment. It may also be 'combined with other leitmotifs to suggest a new dramatic condition' or development.
Although usually a short melody, it can also be a chord progression or even a simple rhythm. Leitmotifs can help to bind a work together into a coherent whole, and also enable the composer to relate a story without the use of words, or to add an extra level to an already present story.

Fortunaltely i have a sony which warns when the videohead is dirty.I had to buy a cleaning cassette locally. Some (little) dropouts are visible in the video

Why should I clean my heads before changing to a different brand of tape?
Every different manufactured tape is slightly different ; These differences show up in the wear patterns or the deposits of microscopic dirt (or shed pieces) on the heads, the rollers, and so on. When a new make of tape is used the first time, it may pick up or disturb previous dirt, because its run pattern is a little different or it may be more or less abrasive. Many times people will try a new brand, and complain bitterly about the dropout and all the hits. It is often not the new tape, but rather dirt or shed particle from the earlier tape. So, it's a good idea to clean those tape heads with a cleaner when you change to a different manufacturer.

Info:
Theo Jansen is a Dutch artist and kinetic sculptor. He builds large works which resemble skeletons of animals that are able to walk using the wind on the beaches of the Netherlands. His animated works are a fusion of art and engineering

Jansen says: "The walls between art and engineering exist only in our minds."

Since 1990 Theo Jansen has been occupied with the making of a new nature. Not pollen or seeds but plastic yellow tubes are used as the basic material of this new nature. ; Eventually he wants to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives.

Jansen has been creating Strandbeest (Dutch: strand=beach; beest=beast), wind-walking examples of what Jansen suggests is a kind of artificial life, since 1990. What was at first a rudimentary "breed" has slowly evolved with the aid of evolutionary computation techniques into a generation of machines that to some degree are able to react to their environment: "over time, these skeletons have become increasingly better at surviving the elements such as storms and water, and eventually I want to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives.

Constructed from PVC piping, wood, and fabric airfoils, Jansen's creations are constantly being improved and are designed to function in the sandy beach environment in which Jansen releases them. The creations are also able to store air pressure and use it to drive themselves in the absence of wind. Jansen's more sophisticated creations are able to detect once they have entered water and walk away from it, and one model is capable of anchoring itself to the earth if it senses a storm approaching.

Camera or computer image editing programs often offer basic automatic image enhancement features that correct color hue and brightness imbalances as well as other image editing features, such as red eye removal, sharpness adjustments, zoom features and automatic cropping. These are called automatic because generally they happen without user interaction or are offered with one click of a button or mouse button or by selecting an option from a menu. Additionally, some automatic editing features offer a combination of editing actions with little or no user interaction.

Fictional film or narrative film is film that tells a fictional story or narrative. Narrative cinema is usually contrasted to films that present information, such as a nature documentary, as well as to some experimental films. In some instances documentary films, while nonfiction, may nonetheless recount a story.
Since the emergence of classical Hollywood style in the early 20th century, narrative, usually in the form of the feature film, has held dominance in commercial cinema and has become popularly synonymous with "the movies." Classical, invisible filmmaking is central to this popular definition. This key element of this invisible filmmaking lies in continuity editing. In this style, narrative and characters are foregrounded, helping the audience to lose themselves in the unfolding fiction.

Photo slideshow software has made it easier to create photo slideshows, eliminating the need for expensive color reversal film, instead requiring only a digital camera and computer.

By using computer software one therefore has the ability to enhance pictures in a way that isn't otherwise possible. There are several new variations on the tradition slide show.

In motion picture terminology, a tracking shot (also known as a dolly shot or trucking shot) is a segment in which the camera is mounted on a camera dolly, a wheeled platform that is pushed on rails while the picture is being taken. One may dolly in on a stationary subject for emphasis, or dolly out, or dolly beside a moving subject

The tracking shot can include smooth movements forward, backward, along the side of the subject, or on a curve. Dollies with hydraulic arms can also smoothly "boom" or "jib" the camera several feet on a vertical axis. Tracking shots, however, cannot include complex pivoting movements, aerial shots or crane shots.

The palmeral of Elche

The Palmeral of Elche is a plantation of palm trees in the Spanish province of Alicante. It is the largest palm grove ; in Europe and one of the largest in the world, surpassed in size only by some in Arab countries.

The Palmeral includes the Parque Municipal and many other orchards (huertos), covering over 3.5 km2 (1.4 sq mi), including 1.5 km2 (0.58 sq mi) within the city of Elche (Elx). It contains more than 11,000 palm trees, mostly date palms , with individual specimens up to 300 years old. At its peak, in the 18th century, it may have covered an area twice as large, with up to 200,000 trees. The dates are harvested in December.

It is thought that palms were originally planted in this location as early as the 5th century BC by Carthaginians who settled in south-east Spain. The plantation survived under the Romans and the Moors.

Cinema Verite
Documentary filmmaking is as old as the motion picture format itself. There has always been a desire for film and video directors to 'tell the story as it happens'.

Just like any other story telling device, documentaries can be broken up into three types; Docudrama, Observational Documentation and Cinema Verite Having shot all three styles, cinema verite has proven to be most challenging. Roughly described as 'Film Truth', cinema verite is the filmmaker's attempt to give an unbiased look at living stories.

Castle of the ghosts

 Filminfo:
Horror films are unsettling movies that strive to elicit the emotions of fear, disgust and horror from viewers. They often feature scenes that startle the viewer through the means of macabre and the supernatural, thus frequently overlapping with the fantasy and science fiction genres.
Horror films deal with the viewer's nightmares, hidden worst fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Although a good deal of it is about the supernatural, if some films contain a plot about morbidity, serial killers, a disease/virus outbreak and surrealism, they may be termed "horror."

Plots written within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage, commonly of supernatural origin, into the everyday world. Themes or elements often prevalent in typical horror films include ghosts, torture, gore, werewolves, ancient curses, satanism, demons, vicious animals, vampires, cannibals, haunted houses, zombies and masked serial killers.

A music video or song video is a short video or film that accompanies a piece of music or song. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos date back much further, they came into prominence in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium. Prior to the 80s, these works were described by various terms including "illustrated song", "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional clip" or "film clip".

Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action. Many music videos do not interpret images from the song's lyrics, making it less literal than expected.

Animatronics is the use of electronics and robotics in mechanised puppets to simulate life.

Animatronics are mainly used in movie making, but also in theme parks and other forms of entertainment. Its main advantages to CGI and stop motion is that it is not a simulation of reality, but rather physical objects moving in real time in front of the camera. The technology behind animatronics has become more advanced and sophisticated over the years, making the puppets even more realistic and lifelike.

Animatronics for film and television productions are used to perform action on camera in situations where the action involves creatures that do not exist, the action is too risky or costly to use real actors or animals, or the action could never be obtained with a living person or animal. The application of animatronics today includes computer controlled as well as radio and manually controlled devices. The actuation of specific movements can be obtained with electric motors, pneumatic cylinders, hydraulic cylinders and cable driven mechanisms. The type of mechanism employed is dictated by the character parameters, specific movement requirements and the project constraints.

A Laaf story

Filminfo:
Props are generally distinct from the costumes worn by the actors, the scenery (sets) or other large objects that can be considered part of the stage. Occasionally, if a period-piece item of clothing is handled or otherwise appears on screen, but is never worn by an actor, then it would be the responsibility of the prop master, and thus considered a prop. For example, belts, stockings, hats, and other normally wearable items may be considered as props if they are merely picked up by an actor or used for alternate purposes. Similarly, a scene in a shoe store may require numerous prop shoes to fill the sets shelves, and therefore will be handled by the prop master or set decorator.

Many props are ordinary objects. However, a prop must "read well" from the house or on-screen, meaning it must look real to the audience. Many real objects are poorly adapted to the task of looking like themselves to an audience, due to their size, durability, or color under bright lights, so some props are specially designed to look more like the actual item than the real object would look. In some cases, a prop is designed to behave differently than the real object would, often for the sake of safety.

Fast motion is a creative way to indicate the passage of time. Accelerated clouds, city traffic or crowds of people are all good candidates for this effect.
Fast motion is also great for showing the progression of a project. Keep your video camera fixed on an object as it is being constructed or assembled, then speed it up to show the entire process in a matter of minutes or seconds.

Glorius GoldenAge ??

The Republic of the Seven United Provinces was attacked in1672 by England, France, the bishop of Münster and ; Cologne.
As a result the cities of the remaining coastal provinces of Holland, Zealand and Frisia panicked and the city governments were taken over by Orangists, opposed to the republican regime of the Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt.

At the IJssel it came to a short battle that was easily won by the French. Now the whole of the Republic lay open for the French. Lower class people stood up against the government, demanded appointment of the Prince and punishment of those responsible for the war and the state of the army. The government of the regents fell, Johan de Witt and others resigned and partisans of Williams III took over. One of the first acts of William III was to strike out the word 'honourably' in the resignation of Johan de Witt.

Cornelis de Witt, the less gifted and more unpopular brother of Johan de Witt, was put in prison in The Hague. When Johan de Witt went there to visit his brother, the small cavalry security force present was sent away on the pretence of having to stop a group of marauding peasants, which were never found. Around the prison a crowd had gathered, demanding the punishment of the brothers. The prison was stormed by civil militia, the brothers were taken out, murdered by the militia members and their bodies mutilated and partly eaten by the crowd.
Most modern historians suspect that the murder of the brothers were the result of a conspiracy involving, among others, William III of Orange.

Dutch Decoy

What does a duck decoy look like?
A duck decoy consists of a pond with a couple of side-arms connected to it. This lake is most of the times surrounded by a sort of swamp bush which creates peace in the pond and also functions as wind protection. The side-arms can be compared with wide curved ditches, with little trap-boxes at the end of it.
These pipes, covered with string netting, used to be covered with thorn-bushes to prevent ducks from flying away. On shore one can also find several screens on one side of the pipe.
These screens, mostly build of reed mats are arranged in a half herringbone design. Which makes it possible for the decoyman and the Kooikerhondje to move freely without the notice of the ducks.
Ducks permanently situated in the decoy are called decoyducks. Their task is to lure other ducks to the decoy.

The Future of Home Entertainment

The recent success within this market already reflects the rapid take up of DVD players. ; In contrast to VHS, which was originally built on a rental model, DVD is seen as essentially a retail proposition and this retail-oriented approach will be developed further in the future. A major reason for people to buy DVDs is for their additional content, and the studios will continue to develop these features, increasingly drawing on their film libraries to provide new material. There will also be a shift to high-definition DVD, bringing even better quality images and increased capacity to carry additional information and interactive features.

Set dressers arrange objects on a film set before shooting. They work under the direction of a leadman, a set decorator and a production designer. Set dressers place furniture, hang pictures, and put out decorative items. They are also responsible for some light construction and assembly of small items, such as air-conditioning ducts. They also move items as necessary to make room for the filming equipment. During the shoot, the prop department works with an on-set dresser to ensure that the props and furnishing are in the proper location for the script and to maintain continuity, as scenes are often shot out of order.

Real digital image stabilization is used in some video cameras. This technique shifts the electronic image from frame to frame of video, enough to counteract the motion. It uses pixels outside the border of the visible frame to provide a buffer for the motion. This technique reduces distracting vibrations from videos or improves still image quality by allowing one to increase the exposure time without blurring the image. This technique does not affect the noise level of the image, except in the extreme borders when the image is extrapolated.

Dutch Disaster As nine-year old kid I use to live in the Netherlands on the edge of the flooded area , where I witnessed consequences of this terrible 1953 event. On the internet there are many images and films on this subject of which I used a few to edit this short impression. This found footage is enriched with some colored stills giving expression to the fear and misery of the victims involved. In the second part when Beethovens tune changes to "All people become friends" pictures of rescue operations and refugees are shown. These images I shall remember until today. In this way I have tried to make a somewhat more emotional visual reminder which fits into my (filmed) biography.

Filmtips: Cut on Motion
Motion distracts the eye from noticing editing cuts. So, when cutting from one image to another, always try to do it when the subject is in motion. For example, cutting from a turning head to an opening door, is much smoother than cutting from a still head to a door about to be opened.

Water & Forts

The Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie Is a 3 to 5 kilometre wide inundation zone stretching approximately 70 kilometres from Muiden (situated on the IJsselmeer), past the city of Utrecht towards the east, down to the large river district ; and the Biesbosch.
Up until 1940 it was the main defence line of the Dutch defence system aimed at defending the western part of the country against any attacks coming from the east and the south. An inundation line consists of a cleverly linked chain of inundation fields (approximately 35 to 50 centimetres high) and natural waters. The system consisted of 6 what is termed inundation basins, which could be regulated by dikes, culverts, canals, fan locks, dams and sluices.

A system of defences, such as forts (covering 2 hectares to 32 hectares) was located at the accesses to the inundations, e.g. near higher roads, or where the inundations could be traversed via existing dikes, lakes or rivers and wherever it was necessary to protect the inundation facilities. There were more than 60 defences of varying types in this Inundation Line. Planting of the defences was strictly regulated. The permanent defences varied from simple earthworks without permanent buildings to earth defences with brick turrets, 'turret forts', bomb-proof barracks, guardhouses, casemates and bomb-proof shelters for artillery. A few older fortified towns (Muiden, Naarden, Weesp, Gorinchem, Woudrichem) were also a part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie.

With the advent of digital editing, film editors and their assistants have become responsible for many areas of filmmaking that used to be the responsibility of others. For instance, in past years, picture editors dealt only with just thatpicture. Sound, music, and (more recently) visual effects editors dealt with the practicalities of other aspects of the editing process, usually under the direction of the picture editor and director. However, digital systems have increasingly put these responsibilities on the picture editor. It is common, especially on lower budget films, for the assistant editors or even the editor to cut in music, mock up visual effects, and add sound effects or other sound replacements.

Chroma keying is a technique for mixing two images or frames together in which a color (or a small color range) from one image is removed (or made transparent), revealing another image behind it. This technique is also referred to as color keying, colour-separation overlay greenscreen, and bluescreen. It is commonly used for weather forecast broadcasts, wherein the presenter appears to be standing in front of a large map, but in the studio it is actually a large blue or green background. The meteorologist stands in front of a bluescreen, and then different weather maps are added on those parts in the image where the color is blue. If the meteorologist himself wears blue clothes, his clothes will become replaced with the background video. This also works for greenscreens, since blue and green are considered the colors least like skin tone.

Autochromes

The Autochrome Lumière is an early color photography process. Patented in 1903 by the Lumière brothers in France ,it was the principal color photography process in use before the advent of subtractive color film in the mid-1930s.
Although difficult to manufacture and relatively expensive, Autochromes were relatively easy to use and were immensely popular among enthusiastic amateur photographers—at least, among those who could bear the cost and were willing to sacrifice the convenience of hand-held "snapshooting" in black-and-white. Autochromes failed to sustain the initial interest of more serious "artistic" practitioners, largely due to their inflexibility.
Autochromes continued to be produced as glass plates into the 1930s, when film-based versions were introduced, first Lumière Filmcolor sheet film in 1931, then Lumicolor roll film in 1933. Although these soon completely replaced glass plate Autochromes, their triumph was short-lived, as Kodak and Agfa soon began to produce multi-layer subtractive color films (Kodachrome and Agfacolor Neu respectively). Nevertheless, the Lumière products had a devoted following, above all in France, and their use persisted long after modern color films had become available. The final version, Alticolor, was introduced in 1952 and discontinued in 1955, marking the end of the nearly fifty-year-long public life of the Autochrome

Christmas fair

If you're reading this I needn't remind you that there's a revolution happening in video, with major TV shows and even feature films being shot in whole or in part with video-capable DSLRs, in particular the Canon 5D MKII, and more recently the Canon 7D. These are pretty lousy video cameras from an operational point of view, but their shallow depth of field, great low-light capability, and high video IQ have earned them a solid reputation among both amateur and professional film makers. An entire accessory and support industry has grown up around them.

Black & white Christmas

Ever seen a video where everything's a lot redder than it should be? It might even have been one of your videos. Different lights are different colors - in bright sunlight a sheet of typing paper looks white, under fluorescent lights it may look slightly green and in tungsten lighting it will have a reddish cast. The "white balance" setting on your camera tells the sensor what color light you're shooting under. Most cameras have a number of pre-set white balances for sun, shade, fluorescent etc, and also an "auto" mode where the camera will try and guess what the light is. Your camera's okay at guessing, but not great. Leaving it in auto mode is a sure way to get an odd color cast to your footage

There are only two kinds of films: good or bad. Anything in-between is often vague and pretentious. Now the big question is how you can make a good film when making a bad one can be just as difficult.

A good script, I believe, is the answer. However while developing a script you really believe in, it is very likely that you will lose your objectivity in the process. As parents have the tendency to believe their children are perfect and can do nothing wrong, a filmmaker can also develop the same misconception.

A biography is someone else's life story. An autobiography is about your own life.

A work is biographical if it covers all of a person's life. As such, biographical works are usually non-fiction, but fiction can also be used to portray a person's life. One in-depth form of biographical coverage is called legacy writing. Together, all biographical works form the genre known as biography, in literature, film, and other forms of media.

Underwater

Today, the small size of fully automatic camcorders with large view screens and long-life rechargeable batteries has reduced the housing size and made underwater videography an easy, fun activity for the diver. Low-cost wide-angle lens add-ons are available for many cameras and some can even be fitted outside the camera housing for versatile use. This lets the photographer get closer and make the subject clearer and also with fewer focusing and depth of field problems. Today cameras are more sensitive to low light conditions and make automatic color balancing adjustments. Nevertheless, deeper water videography still needs auxiliary light sources to bring out colors filtered out of sunlight by the distance it has travelled through water. The longest wavelengths of light are lost first (reds and yellows) leaving only a greenish or blue cast in deep water.
