One of the pioneers of Dutch animation was Hungarian born filmmaker George Pal. He established a studio in Eindhoven in the 1930s and produced many refined animated commercials. Some of these films were shown as supporting programmes in cinemas and others, specifically commercials made for electronics company Philips, were distributed worldwide. Although George Pal lived in The Netherlands for a short period, his work raised the quality of Dutch animation. He influenced a generation of young Dutch animators who were inspired by his work and were educated in his studio. Just before the outbreak of the Second World War, George Pal left for Hollywood where he became well known for his feature films

Why Philips Radio?

Philips was one of the first companies to utilize Pal's films for advertising.Radio was the "TV" of the time, and Philips wanted to communicate the world-openingwonders of radio to people at theaters. Different kinds of music from around theworld provided a perfect backdrop for Pal's animation, which works wonderfully whenset to music. As with other animated musical cartoons, the animation was "scored"to perfectly match the music, beat for beat.

A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound, especially with no spoken dialogue. In silent films for entertainment the dialogue is transmitted through muted gestures, pantomime and title cards. The idea of combining motion pictures with recorded sound is nearly as old as film itself, but because of the technical challenges involved, synchronized dialogue was only made practical in the late 1920s with the perfection of the audion amplifier tube and the introduction of the Vitaphone system. After the release of The Jazz Singer in 1927, "talkies" became more and more commonplace. Within a decade, popular production of silent films had ceased.

This video shows the famous cheese market of Alkmaar just after the end of World War II, as well as to day. The narration of the newsreel which is the first part of the film is in Dutch. The second part has an English voice-over.

In the after war years I witnessed the introduction of color in the newsreels . Because of cost reasons the majority was still shot in black & white followed by a special item in full colour which leads to a a funny contrast as you can see.

About 100,000 people from all over the world visit the cheese market in Alkmaar every year. The oldest "ordinance on the cheesebearers" dates from june 17th 1593.

A Dutch camera-team is filming the climbing by bicycle on the Ventoux mountain in southern France.
The actor is an old French professional of the Tour de France explaining the various difficulties of the slope. Main reason of this killing mountain is the absence of recovery during the run to the summit.
The camera-team is used to filming with a shoulder-camera and they have to improvise with shooting out of a car.
An intermezzo is shot at the memorial of the British professional Tour de France cyclist Tony Simpson.
The arrival at the top was put into scene.

Parallel editing (cross cutting) is the technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen simultaneously but in different locations. If the scenes are simultaneous, they occasionally culminate in a single place, where the relevant parties confront each other.

Why use it? To add interest and excitement to an otherwise boring scene. Parallel editing is often applied to create suspense

Parallel Editing Cut
Let's say you have a scene where a villain is chasing the hero of the film. To spend the entire chase scene trying to keep both the hero and the villain in the frame at the same time will become very difficult and un-engaging after a while. A better way to approach this problem is through the use of parallel cutting. In this example, the scene would consist of several shots of the hero running in one direction, and some shots of the villain running in the same direction. Perhaps the hero looks back, out of frame, at his pursuer. At this point, the editor would insert of a shot of the villain. Both characters haven't share the same screen space, yet the audience still understands that one is chasing the other.

1942. In an attempt to keep a group of children from being sent to the death camps, the Jew Walter Süskind befriends SS man Aus der Fünten. When the latter finds out that Walter has been deceiving him and his affection was faked, the Nazi takes revenge on the Jew.

Nazi-Germany occupied The Netherlands from May 1940 till May 1945. In 1942, the Dutch Jews were told they would have to leave for Germany in order to work in labor camps. Some hundred people at a time, the Jews were packed into the “Hollandsche Schouwburg” (the “Dutch Theatre”) in Amsterdam. From here they were taken by train to the transit camp “Westerbork” in the North-East of Holland. Here the trains left – not for Germany as the deportees had thought – but for Poland.

A high speed camera is a device used for recording fast moving objects . After recording, the images stored on the media can be played back in slow-motion.

High speed cameras can film up to a quarter of a million frames per second by running the film over a rotating prism or mirror instead of using a shutter, thus reducing the need for stopping and starting the film behind a shutter which would tear the film stock at such speeds. Using this technique one can stretch one second to more than ten minutes of playback time (super slow motion). The fastest cameras are generally in use in scientific research, military test and evaluation, and industry. .

A problem for high speed cameras is the needed exposure for the film, so one needs very bright light to be able to film at forty thousand frames per second.

All development in high speed cameras is now focused on digital video cameras which have many operational and cost benefits over film cameras.

A good area to do this shot would be a scene that takes place on a building. If the aerial shot is of a character it can make them seem insignificant. Circular shots are also possible.

Landscape art is a term that covers the depiction of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, and especially art where the main subject is a wide view, with its elements arranged into a coherent composition. Film Title Design is and always has been an essential part of any motion picture.

The Main Title Design consisted of the film company’s name and/or logo and the presentation of the main characters along with the actor’s names, generally using that same artwork. Then, early in the 1930s the more progressive motion picture studios started to change their approach in presenting their screen credits. The major studios took on the challenge of improving the way they introduced their films. They made the decision to present a more complete list of credits to go with a higher quality of artwork to be used in their screen credits.
Quality artists met this challenge by designing their artwork to “set a mood” and “capture the audience” before the film began.
Modern technology has enabled a much more fantastical way of presenting them through use of programs such as Adobe After Effects. Although a form of editing, it is considered a different role and art form rather than of a traditional film editor.

A drive-in theater is a form of cinema structure consisting of a large outdoor screen, a projection booth, a concession stand and a large parking area for automobiles. Within this enclosed area, customers can view movies from the privacy and comfort of their cars.

The screen can be as simple as a wall that is painted white, or it can be a steel truss structure with a complex finish. Originally, a movie's sound was provided by speakers on the screen and later by an individual speaker hung from the window of each car, which would be attached by a wire. This system was superseded by the more economical and less damage-prone method of broadcasting the soundtrack at a low output power on AM or FM Radio to be picked up by a car radio. This method also allows the soundtrack to be picked up in stereo by the audience on an often high fidelity stereo installed in the car instead of monaural through a simple speaker.

9.5 mm film is an amateur film format introduced by Pathé Frères in 1922 as part of the Pathé Baby amateur film system. It was conceived initially as an inexpensive format to provide copies of commercially-made films to home users, although a simple camera was released shortly afterwards.

It became very popular in Europe over the next few decades and is still used by a small number of enthusiasts today. Over 300,000 projectors were produced and sold mainly in France and England, and many commercial features were available in the format.

The format uses a single, central perforation (sprocket hole) between each pair of frames, as opposed to 8 mm film, which has perforations along one edge, and most other film formats, which have perforations on each side of the image. The single hole allowed more of the film to be used for the actual image, and in fact the image area is almost the same size as 16 mm film. The perforation in the film is invisible to viewers, as the intermittent shutter blocks the light as the film is pulled through the gate to the next frame.

Harry Langdon

There was a fourth major silent movie comedian in the 1920s, who many feel ranks up there with Chaplin, Keaton and Harold Lloyd, but who now is sadly forgotten. His name was Harry Langdon and he was born on June 15, 1884, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to a self-employed painter, William, and a Salvation Army volunteer, Lavinia. In his youth, the stage-struck Harry hawked newspapers across the Missouri River in neighboring Omaha, Nebraska to earn money to attend the theater and to stage his own tyro-theatricals. He soon began winning a succession of amateur contests in the area's theaters.

This is a film which was written and shot in my hometown. Most of the locations are very familiar to me. As is the story based on a real problem in our country: increasing violent and loutish behaviour.

Thrillers heavily stimulate the viewer's moods such as a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, anxiety, suspense, excitement, tension, and terror. Literary devices such as red herrings and cliffhangers are used extensively. The cover-up of important information from the viewer, and fight and chase scenes are common methods in all of the thriller subgenres, although each subgenre has its own characteristics and methods.
Common methods in crime thrillers are mainly ransoms, captivities, heists, revenge, kidnappings. More common in mystery thrillers are investigations and the whodunit technique. Common elements in psychological thrillers are mind games, psychological themes, stalking, confinement/deathtraps, horror-of-personality, and obsession. Elements such as fringe theories, false accusations and paranoia are common in paranoid thrillers. Some horror and action films have strong thriller elements and they are often considered part of thriller genre.

An axial cut is a type of jump cut, where the camera suddenly moves closer to or further away from its subject, along an invisible line drawn straight between the camera and the subject. While a plain jump cut typically involves a temporal discontinuity , an axial cut is a way of maintaining the illusion of continuity.

An axial cut can be made with the use of a zoom lens, or physically moving the camera with a crane or camera dolly. The intervening footage is then removed while editing the film. Since footage is discarded, this technique works better for static shots. If action is required, several takes will be required to get the necessary footage.

There are several standard image-change rates (or frame rates) used today: 24 Hz, 25 Hz, 30 Hz, 50 Hz, and 60 Hz. Technical details related to the backwards-compatible addition of color to the NTSC signal caused other variants to appear: 24/1.001 Hz, 30/1.001 Hz, and 60/1.001 Hz.
The image change rate fundamentally affects how "fluid" the motion it captures will look on the screen. The documentary received the Humanitas Award last night from the International Documentary Association. In "State of the Stars" follows author Leonard Retel Helmrich family for twelve years. In 2001 and 2004, the first two parts of the triptych, "Position of the sun" and "State of the moon. This village can boast about being amongst one of the most beautiful villages in France. It has narrow cobbled streets which thread their way through tall houses; built against the rock, clinging onto its flanks and whispering the tales of a thousand legends.
Gordes is also proud of its castle firmly planted in its very core and which reminds the passer-by of a past rich with conquests but also marked with the sufferings of its inhabitants. Today, the castle acts as both a Town Hall and a Museum sheltering the works of art of the painter Pol Mara.
Such a cultural tradition is kept alive to this day, during the summer time when many exhibits do take place in buildings marked by History, such as the St James almonry, the White Penitents chapel etc.

Constructing a Scene

Since a scene is a dramatic unit of a larger story, each scene should be built in the same way as your screenplay. Once you have the scene fleshed out, go back and edit it. Is there anything from the beginning that you can trim? Try and make the scene as tight as possible; begin the scene as closely to the end as you can. You probably have a good idea about how you want it to end to increase either the drama or the comedic effect; but you don't want to tax your audience's patience by including anything superfluous in the beginning of the scene. If a scene's length runs more than two pages, go back and see if anything can be edited out. Every scene has its own flow and rhythm. If it feels like it's the right length-- long or short--that is something as a writer that you need to figure out.
